It isn't that expensive. Most of the time was spent researching and if you are looking for something really simple you can buy readers and access controllers super cheap off ebay. You just need to make sure that the stuff you get is compatible with your chip. I am using a HitagS, currently it is emulating a em4102 type chip so it works with standard readers that support that type of chip. I plan to implement more security down the track but not just yet as I am still playing. Most access controls on buildings either use em4102 style or a lower frequency style rfid system, HID operates on the 125Khz but I believe uses a different modulation so this can also be copied with little effort provided you have the gear. The chip I am using cost around $10 after getting it shipped. You can get them a lot cheaper but I purchased through a friend in the states who has had one of these in his hands for some time now.
